Never been any good at depicting arcane mambo jumbo stuff but this one turned out okay-ish

Not okay-ish, this really great! I have this card!

Frankly I think seeing artwork with Jace not having his hood on all the frigging time is a very nice change of pace.

You did a great job on this!

Jace is a legend and you managed to go well in the steps laid out by his former depictions. And well, you can scratch the "never been any good", because this one is more than okay-ish. I don't like overdone magic. This one is subtle, yet powerful.

I don't know what the brief from Wizards looked like, but I'd say you captured this particular planeswalker and the blue mana in a great way. Blue mana is subtle, mind playing, controlling, fleeting, changing...

Hats off to you, sir.

Why thank you, good sir.

The original brief for this one was based around some mystical force sweeping over Jace, hence the lack of his trademark hood, swept backwards by the aetherical gale infusing him with knowledge. Somewhere in the process of approvals and finishing, the thing drifted away from the "blow dryer in your face" into what finally made onto the card.

Thank you for the insight. This is something we do not hear much often as artists post the final piece and we cannot see the motivation behind it.

I guess that at some point they decided that he should be more in control. After all it is called Jace's Ingenuity and draws cards. So that "sweeping over" idea would go more with a pile of cards thrown at you :D
